Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO endorses Christina Henderson, Wendell Felder, and NO on Initiative 83

Washington DC — At the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO's regular meeting of Delegates on Monday, October 21, 2024, the Executive Board and Delegates approved the recommendations of the DC Committee on Political Education (COPE) for endorsements in DC's November 2024 general election.

The Executive Board and Delegates voted to endorse the following candidates and positions on the DC ballot this November:

  • Christina Henderson for DC Council At-Large

  • Wendell Felder for DC Council in Ward 7

  • Allister Chang for State Board of Education in Ward 2

  • Frazier O’Leary for State Board of Education in Ward 4

  • Eboni-Rose Thompson for State Board of Education in Ward 7

  • Lajoy Johnson-Law for State Board of Education in Ward 8

  • NO on Initiative 83

These join the Council's spring endorsements of Robert White for DC Council At-Large and Janeese Lewis George for DC Council in Ward 4. See all of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO's endorsements for November's election.

"Our Affiliates represent tens of thousands of workers in DC and Maryland, and these endorsements make it clear that workers want our elected leaders to prioritize working families and a strong labor movement in our region," said Samuel Epps, President of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO. "Councilmember Henderson and Mr. Felder demonstrated a clear commitment to these issues and we look forward to working with them together in the next Council term."

"In addition, we encourage DC voters to vote 'NO' on Initiative 83. This ballot measure would institute Ranked Choice Voting in DC and open primaries to Independent voters. DC COPE members expressed serious concern about the implications of this measure, and voted overwhelmingly to oppose it."

The Council thanks all the Affiliate unions, Officers, and Delegates who participated in this endorsement process, particularly the DC COPE members who oversaw all the candidate interviews. DC COPE Co-Chair Herbert Harris Jr. facilitated the endorsement process for the Council.

Dropboxes are currently open for DC voters, and Early Voting begins this coming Monday, October 28. The last day to vote is Election Day, on November 5. Learn more about how to vote in DC and the Metropolitan Washington Council's endorsements for this election at dclabor.org/voter-guides.
